Routine anal gland expression

Some dogs and cats may experience problems with their anal glands becoming full or uncomfortable, and for some pets regular routine expressions become part of their on-going care routine. My routine anal gland expression provides a gentle and professional support to help keep your pet comfortable, as often as is required.

The anal glands are the scent glands located either side of the anus. Normally they empty naturally when your pet goes to the toilet but in some pets they can struggle to do this effectively. This can often depend on their size, breed, environment or health conditions. When this happens they can become full, uncomfortable and impacted.

During an appointment I will assess your dog and discuss any concerns you may have noticed. As appropriate I will gently express the anal glands using a suitable technique, with your pets comfort and welfare being my complete priority. Not every dog will require regular anal gland expressions and unnecessarily expressing the glands can cause irritation and on-going problems

There are some common signs that your dog or cat may be experiencing anal gland discomfort, the symptoms can include, scooting their bottom on the floor, excessive trying to lick or chew at the area, a change in their usual toileting behaviour or an unusual  and unpleasant fishy smell. However these signs may also have other causes so should not be automatically assumed to be the anal glands.

If I notice any signs of inflammation, swelling, discharge, bleeding, significant pain or infection, then this is not a routine expression and I will direct you to seek veterinary advice.
